For the second year running Popcaan returned to his home parish of St. Thomas for the annual staging of his event Unruly Fest. Thousands of Unruly fans descended on the "Forgotten Parish” and were treated to performances from artists both local & international acts.
The #VeryCulture team is honored to have been invited to capture these timeless images, do enjoy.
In the first week of December, I had the pleasure of accompanying Protoje & The Indiggnation to Dubai for a 3 day Festival - SoleDXB. I learned that this was a yearly festival in which they focus on different cultural aspects each yearly staging. This year’s culture in focus was Jamaica. Many other Jamaicans and Jamaican representatives were in attendance, and to me it seemed pretty significant to have such an authentic representation of Jamaican culture in Dubai all at once, I decided I would try to document our presence in my own unique way.
The Very Culture team was invited to the private pre-release listening session where Mortimer and Winta James broke down the “Fight the Fight” project for us. He told us that often, his music comes to him in the lowest of times. Instead of a reflection of struggle, the music uplifts, comforts and encourages. It’s a message to himself and to those around him. There is positivity, even in his lowest moments, that inspires these songs. As Winta said so perfectly, we were “blown away by his ability to use words and music to convey certain emotions, especially as a Jamaican man”. Vulnerable, true to self, hopeful, soulful, mindful, heart-ful.
One of Jamaica’s premier music festivals, a two night showcase of Jamaican indigenous popular music and global sounds with live bands. A yearly event that many look forward too both locally & internationally.
Producers Krs. and J.L.L. are two sound and genre benders who have been successfully able to blend the expected with the unexpected and are key creators of a new sound and possibly a new genre in Jamaican popular music. Moving from relatively unknown local SoundCloud favorites to now having tracks reaching the Billboard charts.
